  • Banging Out
    When someone retired they were escorted out of the workshop. As they left everyone beat on the swarf skips, work tops and dustbins to signal their leaving the site.

    This was the term used when work was done which was not 'exactly' part of the normal job. Known elsewhere as 'Homers' or 'Government jobs' etc. It is not known where this term originated.
